I don’t even have to go into great detail about what Derrick Henry has done for not only the Titans but for the city of Nashville. The man has been the heartbeat and backbone of the Titans ever since his emergence as one of the most prolific running backs of our generation. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.
Teams can begin to apply the franchise tag to players with expiring contracts beginning tomorrow, February 20. The deadline ends on March 5th. Legal tampering period starts on March 11th and ends on March 13th.
The Titans have their own deadline today. If the Titans don’t extend the contracts of Ryan Tannehill, Azeez Al-Shaair, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and Derrick Henry by the end of the business day (3PM ET), each player will see the void year of their contract accelerate into 2024.
The Titans are not going to extend Ryan Tannehill for obvious reasons. With Azeez Al-Shaair and Sean Murphy-Bunting, the Titans may possibly extend one if not both. An extension of Al-Shaair’s contract is something to keep a close eye on.
Now on to the man himself, Derrick Henry. Henry has already said that he wants to test the market but is open to returning to Nashville. General manager Ran Carthon and head coach Brian Callahan have both said that they are open to a reunion as well. The Titans more than likely will not extend Henry’s contract today. It doesn’t mean that he isn’t coming back if the team decides not to extend him, but Titans fans should mentally prepare to move on if they haven’t already.
No matter what happens, DERRICK HENRY WILL ALWAYS AND FOREVER BE A TITAN!!!
