The Titans have been extremely active on the coaching and player acquisition front this offseason. Tennessee replaced most of their coaching staff from last year and signed multiple new starters through free agency. Let’s rank the five best offseason moves the Titans have made… So Far!!
1. CB L’Jarius Sneed Trade
The big splash the Titans have made this offseason is acquiring second-team All-Pro corner L’Jarius Sneed. Tennessee stole Sneed away from the defending champs for just a third-round pick and a seventh-round pick swap. The 27-year-old was arguably the best corner in football last year, allowing a 56.2 passer rating when targeted and a 51.0% completion rate. Sneed’s four-year, $76.4 million contract with $55 million guaranteed is also incredibly reasonable, as he isn’t even in the top five for CB APY and will be lower on the list as time passes. Overall, this is an A+ trade for the Titans, as they add one of the best corners in the NFL to a secondary that struggled in 2023.
2. C Lloyd Cushenberry Signing
The Titans replaced one of the worst pass-blocking centers in the NFL, Aaron Brewer, with one of the best. In 1,070 snaps, Cushenberry allowed one sack and 14 QB pressures in 2023. The 26-year-old was also solid in the run game, scoring a 72.4 run-blocking grade. Cushenberry’s $50 million contract over four years with $30 million guaranteed is a substantial investment but one that is worth it. Though the Calvin Ridley signing was more exciting, landing the best free agent center in Lloyd Cushenberry to protect Will Levis and anchor the offensive line for years will prove valuable.
3. WR Calvin Ridley Signing
Tennessee signed the star wide receiver to a four-year, $92 million deal with $46.98 fully guaranteed. Though the contract is a slight overpay, the Titans desperately needed another viable receiving threat. Ridley will form a formidable duo with Deandre Hopkins and provide Will Levis with another explosive playmaker who creates elite separation. Overall, a move that will significantly benefit the new-look Titans’ offense.
4. The New Coaching Staff
Owner Amy Adams Strunk caught a ton of heat for firing Mike Vrabel in January, but the Titans’ new-look coaching staff has come together incredibly well. New HC Brian Callahan will run a more modern and evolved offense and will be extremely beneficial in QB Will Levis’ development. With Callahan coming in as head coach, Tennessee was able to lure his father, Bill Callahan, out of Cleveland to serve as the offensive line coach. Bill has coached 14 different offensive linemen to Pro Bowl selections and is widely regarded as one of the greatest offensive line coaches ever. Finally, the Titans hired one of the best defensive coordinator candidates, Dennard Wilson, to lead the defense. Wilson was the Ravens DB coach last year and served as the Eagles DB coach in 2022. Both secondaries were among the best in football when coached by the new Titans defensive coordinator.
5. CB Chidobe Awuzie Signing
The Titans signed the physical and tenacious corner to a three-year, $36 million deal with $19 million fully guaranteed. The 29-year-old was inconsistent in 2023, coming off a torn ACL, but was excellent in 2021 and 2022 for Cincinnati. If Awuzie returns to his pre-injury form, the Titans might boast the best CB duo in the NFL for the next 2-3 years.
