Post Day One FA Target: A Veteran Cornerback the Titans should Target!!!

The Tennessee Titans were active during the first day of NFL Free Agency, making a flurry of moves to address the team’s glaring weaknesses. The Two-Tone Blue kicked the day off by signing RB Tony Pollard to a three-year, $24 million deal to pair with Tyjae Spears. Shortly after, Tennessee addressed the offensive line by signing Center Lloyd Cushenberry to a four-year, $50 million deal. The Titans ended the day by signing two defensive players to multi-year deals: CB Chidobe Awuzie and LB Kenneth Murray. Though GM Ran Carthon made several moves on day one, day two of free agency has been relatively quiet, as Tennessee hasn’t made a single signing on day two as of 6:30 PM CT. The Titans already signed CB Chidobe Awuzie to a three-year, $36 million contract, but more help is needed in Denard Wilson’s secondary. Here is one veteran CB still on the market the Titans should pursue!

Steven Nelson has played for four teams in his career, but his latest stint was in Houston, where he experienced two straight phenomenal seasons and especially shined in Demeco Ryans’ defense in 2023. The 31-year-old snagged four interceptions, knocked down 12 passes, and allowed a 73.3 passer rating when targeted during the 2023 season. Nelson also scored highly on PFF, with a coverage grade of 72.3 with no pressure and a single coverage grade of 63.9.

Not only is Nelson great in coverage, but his run defense will also be a plus. The former third-round pick missed just five tackles in 2023 while playing 1,088 snaps! Nelson’s willingness to get his hands dirty in the run game would pair well with new Titans’ DC Dennard Wilson’s philosophy, as the first DC stated that he wants an “attacking defense with a violent approach.”

Free Agency is just getting underway, but GM Ran Carthon still has a lot of work to do. Signing Chidobe Awuzie to aid a Titans secondary that struggled in 2023 was brilliant, but Tennessee still needs more help in the secondary. Steven Nelson may not be the most exciting name, but he’s a damn good football player who will provide leadership, tenacity, and quality play for the Titans…

PROJECTED CONTRACT: 2 years, $12 million ($6 million GRT, $6 million AAV)
