The Clock Is Ticking for Mike Vrabel

From R.J. Ellison

Mike Vrabel’s time as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans has primarily been successful. He has had multiple playoff wins, multiple winning seasons, and has beaten some of the best teams in the NFL. Mike Vrabel during the early years of his head coaching career has shown he is a good head coach in the league. The problem is the Titans want to be more than just good; they want to be GREAT. Mike Vrabel in my opinion is not great.

The 2023 season is by far the worst season in Mike Vrabel’s tenure. Vrabel isn’t 100 percent at blame for this season, but you can see his flaws as a head coach. I think the Titans offensive gameplan is very basic and will not win a Superbowl in today’s era of football. I love the physicality and the run first approach but at some point, we need finesse to go with our physical style of play. The Titans need to be able to pass the ball when the run game isn’t working. The Titans offensive line has regressed over the past two seasons, and that leads me to my next point. VRABEL’S APPROACH ON OFFENSE IS HOLDING THE TITANS BACK AND MAKING PLAYERS REGRESS!!!!

There’s a laundry list of players that have regressed on offense during Vrabel’s time as head coach. There have been multiple players that came to the Titans and didn’t do anything significant but went to another team and found a role easily. People blame Tim Kelly, but wasn’t he hired after Todd Downing? Did us fans not want Mike Vrabel to go outside the facility to get a better offensive mind and change some things? Thats leads me to my next point. MIKE VRABEL IS AS STUBBORN AS EVER!!!!

The man does not believe in change. Everything is his way or the highway. He would rather die on the hill of his game plan than make adjustments in game. We saw it against Miami and Houston this season. He ran the football into a brick wall until he had to abandon the game plan. Against the Ravens in 2020, we kept running Henry into a defense that was holding him to 2.2 yards per carry. In the 2021 playoff game against the Bengals, they decided to keep passing the ball when Tannehill was clearly not the answer. Former Titans RB D’Onta Foreman appeared to be the hotter hand, but Derrick Henry got the bulk of the carries even though it was his first game back after a season ending injury. \

Vrabel’s stubbornness has made me a non-believer. Even when he has the talent, his unwillingness to adjust has shown that he capable of keeping the Titans from winning a Super Bowl. The Titans should move on from Vrabel at the end of the season in my opinion before things get worse. I just don’t think he’s the answer.
