Training camp has officially begun for the Titans and, Jeffery Simmons has embraced the role of a leader and the face of the franchise. Simmons is entering his 6th year in the league. Injuries have slowed down the 6’4″ 305lb defensive lineman, but Simmons isn’t looking back. He is primed to have the season everyone has been waiting on this year.
Simmons spoke to the media on Wednesday and had a lot to say. When asked about his new leadership role, Simmons said “I’ve been feeling like this is my team.” He mentioned former Titans Jurrell Casey, DaQuan Jones, and Wesley Woodyard as guys he followed coming into the league. Simmons added that he started feeling like this was his team in his third year.
Although Simmons is high on holding his teammates accountable, he also wants to be held accountable. That’s very understandable for someone who is chasing to be the best defensive tackle in the league.
The Titans aren’t viewed as serious contenders to start the season, but this is a big year for Simmons. He signed a four-year, $94 million contract extension in April of 2023. No one has any doubts when it comes to whether Jeffery Simmons will show up. Even after being held back by injuries the last two years, Simmons is highly optimistic going into the 2024 season.
If Simmons can stay healthy, he shouldn’t have a problem producing under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. With Wilsons attacking philosophy and Simmons’ physical style of play, the Titans’ defense could establish themselves as one of the most feared defenses in football.
