It is widely known throughout the NFL that the Titans are in a rebuilt. Titans’ fans didn’t expect things to look this bad though. Today’s 52-14 loss to the Detroit Lions went exactly how everyone thought it would go. The Titans showed flashes on offense but shot themselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers. Defensively, the Titans were not much better. The real problem was special teams.
Special teams have been a problem for the Titans throughout the season. To be honest, it’s been a problem for the Titans over the last couple of years. The Lions took full advantage of the poor play from the Titans special teams. The Lions racked up 262 return yards. 190 of those came on five punt returns by former Titans wide receiver/returner Khalif Raymond. Raymond also had a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Sure, you can blame the players for not executing properly but this has been the case all season long. At some point, the coaches have to be held accountable. Colt Anderson was hired by Titans Head Coach Brian Callahan to improve special teams play across the board. Instead, the Titans have significantly regressed.
Former Titans Special Teams Coach Craig Aukerman was bad. He even got punter Ryan Stonehouse killed last season before he was fired. Aukerman wasn’t this bad though. The Titans would be doing a huge disservice to everyone if Colt Anderson keeps his job after tomorrow.
When asked about Colt Anderson’s lack of experience during today’s post-game press conference, Brian Callahan refused to discuss it.
“I’m not going to get into all of that. I think Colt is a good football coach. We haven’t played well enough.”
It’s understood that Callahan isn’t going to through Anderson under the, but he should own his faults and not acknowledge Colt as a good football coach. He clearly isn’t.
